Predibase grew out of conversations I had with Prof. Chris Ré during my time as a Staff Research Scientist in his Hazy Research group at Stanford. We kept coming back to the same frustration: training and deploying machine learning models was far harder than it needed to be, and the gap between research and production was costing teams enormous amounts of time. That conviction became Predibase.
In late 2020, Chris and I co-founded Predibase together with Travis Addair - co-creator of Horovod, the distributed deep learning framework - and Dev Rishi. I served as CEO, CSO, and Co-founder, building the company from the ground up.
In June 2025, Predibase was acquired by Rubrik for over $100 million.
The Platform
Predibase is built on two open-source foundations I helped create: Ludwig and LoRAX. Together they make it straightforward to fine-tune large language models for specific tasks and serve them efficiently in production.
LoRAX - Thousands of Fine-Tuned Models on One GPU
LoRAX is our open-source LLM serving framework and one of the things I'm most proud of building. The key insight: with LoRA, fine-tuned adapters are small enough that you can multiplex thousands of them on a single GPU, sharing the base model weights. This lets every customer have their own fine-tuned model without needing a dedicated GPU - collapsing the cost of production LLM serving by orders of magnitude.
Turbo LoRA
Turbo LoRA combines LoRA adapters with speculative decoding, significantly reducing inference latency while maintaining the benefits of fine-tuning.
Fine-Tuning Platform
The Predibase platform made it possible for any engineer - not just ML specialists - to fine-tune LLMs on their own data:
- Parameter-efficient fine-tuning via LoRA and QLoRA
- Automatic evaluation and validation pipelines
- One-click deployment to private serverless endpoints
- Ludwig-powered AutoML for classical ML models
- Native integrations with Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon, and Google
Funding
We raised a total of $28.4M across two rounds:
- Series A - May 2022: $16.25M led by Greylock and The Factory, plus angels including Anthony Goldbloom (Kaggle CEO)
- Series A extension - May 2023: $12.2M led by Felicis Ventures
Acquisition
In June 2025, Rubrik acquired Predibase for over $100M to accelerate agentic AI adoption in enterprise data security and management. The Predibase technology and team joined Rubrik to bring fine-tuned LLM capabilities to Rubrik's platform.
